Leaders and Visionaries in Osteoporosis

  • Dr. Bruns has focused his attention to osteoporosis prevention, treatment, and education. He has started the Bone Health Clinic at SSM Health Orthopedics with the goal of prevention of subsequent fractures and improving bone health in the community. He is a Certified Clinical Densitometrist (ISCD). He directs collaboration with other healthcare professionals in the team to provide the most comprehensive treatment for osteoporosis.

  • Mr. Phipps is a nationally recognized bone health expert, teacher, and speaker specializing in bone health and implementation of Fracture Liaison Services (FLS). He is a Certified Clinical Densitometrist (ISCD). Originally from Iowa, his passion has been in the medical field since 1980, from volunteering with the local ambulance service, paramedic as well as positions in hospitals and insurance. He is motivated in his work by having the ability to help improve the quality of others’ lives, not just at the local level, but also nationally.

  • Mr. Cozadd has developed a comprehensive bone health clinic with TRIA orthopedics in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His clinical practice is dedicated to the treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. He is particularly interested in secondary fracture prevention and peri-operative bone health optimization. He is a current member of the American Orthopedic Association’s Own the Bone steering committee where he helps integrate and advance osteoporosis care in the orthopedic setting. He also enjoys lecturing on osteoporosis-related topics and mentoring prospective FLS sites.

  • Dr. Dempster is Professor of Clinical Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University in New York and Past Director of the Regional Bone Center of Helen Hayes Hospital, New York State Department of Health, West Haverstraw, New York. He received a First-Class Honors degree and a PhD from the University of Glasgow in Scotland and completed postdoctoral studies in Switzerland and France.

    Dr. Dempster is a Past President of the International Society of Bone Morphometry and has served on the Scientific Advisory Council of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. He is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society. Dr. Dempster’s iconic micrographs of osteoporotic bone have been widely reproduced in the scientific and popular press, including being displayed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

    Dr. Dempster is an Associate Editor of Osteoporosis International and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Densitometry. His research studies have been continuously supported by the National Institutes of Health for the past 35 years.

    Dr. Dempster has published over 300 research papers on the pathophysiology and treatment of bone disease. He is the Editor in Chief of the Vth edition of the highly respected textbook Marcus and Feldman’s Osteoporosis (affectionately known as “Big Red”). In 2019, Dr. Dempster was elected as a Fellow of the ASBMR in recognition of his contributions to the field of bone metabolism.

    Dr. Dempster is an active member of Rotary International and is a Paul Harris Fellow.

  • Dr. Goode is a board-certified orthopedic trauma surgeon and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons.

    In the Mobile area, He oversees the only truly comprehensive orthopedic osteoporosis clinic. Dr. Goode is active with the University serving on the Medical Alumni Association Executive board and overseeing the Frederick N Meyer 5013c nonprofit organization which provides educational support and grants for the USA Orthopaedic residency.

    His goal is to elevate and standardize the level of care orthopedic patients receive regardless of the hospital system ensuring the best possible outcomes for all patients.

  • Dr Jackson is a board-certified neurosurgeon and bestselling author of the book ‘The God Prescription’. He is a contributing author in the book Let America Live by Dr Stella Immanuel. He was a presenter with Dr Ben Carson and Dr Peter McCullough at the Liberty and Health Alliance Conference 1/8/22.

    Dr. Jackson obtained his BA from the University of Chicago. Medical degree from Wayne State University. General surgery training at Northwestern University. Neurosurgical Residency at Penn State University. Complex neurosurgical spine fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

    He is the Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of the Michigan Neurosurgical Institute, P.C., which he founded in 2004.

    In 2017 he founded the MNI Great Lakes ECHO LLC, where he developed the first Project ECHO in Michigan, and the second Bone Health project ECHO in the world. The MNI Great Lakes Addiction Medicine and Chronic Pain & their COVID-19 ECHO series are also the first of its kind in Michigan, created to address the opioid and COVID-19 provider needs to assist in the effort to save lives.

  • Dr. Lake is a nationally recognized bone health expert, author, teacher, and speaker specializing in Post Fracture Prevention and implementation of Fracture Liaison Serves (FLS). Ann works closely with the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and many other bone health societies and organizations. She is a Certified Clinical Densitometrist (ISCD). The FLS program developed by Dr Lake at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is a Star Performer with Own the Bone (AOA).

  • Dr. McClung is an endocrinologist with a special interest in metabolic bone diseases and disorders of calcium metabolism. As Founding (now Emeritus) Director of the Oregon Osteoporosis Center in Portland, Dr McClung has, for the past 4 decades, cared for patients with osteoporosis and related conditions. He developed quality control procedures for bone density testing, was involved in many major clinical trials of osteoporosis treatments and has participated in the development of osteoporosis guidelines for several national and international organizations. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, numerous invited papers and book chapters and co-authored the Bone and Mineral Manual. Dr McClung was a charter member of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, currently serves on the Boards of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and the North American Menopause Society and on the editorial boards of several journals related to metabolic bone diseases. He is currently a Professorial Fellow at the Mary McKillop Center for Health Research at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne.

    Dr. McClung brings to the ASOP Board many years of experience as an educator of clinicians managing patients with osteoporosis. For several years beginning in the mid-1990s, the Oregon Osteoporosis Center hosted training courses in bone densitometry and osteoporosis management. For the past 15 years, Dr McClung has directed an osteoporosis workshop for Endocrine Fellows. He has received teaching awards from several societies and is a frequently invited speaker/teacher at national and international clinical conferences.

  • Dr. Miller is The Distinguished Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. In addition, Dr. Miller is Medical Director of the Colorado Center for Bone Health in Lakewood, Colorado.

    After receiving his medical degree with Distinction from The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, he became an intern in medicine and chief medical resident at the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York. Subsequently, he completed a clinical fellowship and research fellowship in the Division of Renal Diseases at the University of Colorado Medical Center.

    Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women has been the focus of Dr. Miller’s research. He has been the Principal Investigator of a number of clinical trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of various therapies now used or considered for use in these patients, such as alendronate, ibandronate, risedronate, and zoledronic acid, parathyroid hormone, and renal bone disease. Based on his research, Dr. Miller has authored or coauthored more than 350 publications, including original articles, chapters, and books. He has contributed his work to the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Osteoporosis International, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Notably, Dr. Miller was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Densitometry for 8 years, and is on the editorial boards of Osteoporosis International, Calcified Tissue Research, The Journal of Women’s Health and the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Clinical Newsletter.

    A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Miller is a member of numerous professional organizations. He was a Founder of the Metabolic Bone Disease Society of Colorado in 1980 and is its current President, and also the Founding President of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. Dr. Miller has served on The National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Interspecialty Council (NOF); the Professional Practice Committee of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) and is on the Board of Directors of The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).

    Dr. Miller has received numerous awards for his professional contributions including an Honorary Doctor of Science from Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pa; The Lasker Award from The Colorado Chapter of The American College of Physicians, and Outstanding Teacher, Publication(s) and Researcher of The Year Awards from the UCHSC; and The Outstanding Volunteer Faculty Award from Denver Health and Hospitals. Most recently Dr. Miller was awarded the Career Achievement Award (2005) and The Distinguished Clinical Professor promotion (2006) by The Department of Medicine of UCHSC.

  • Dr. Olenginski is a board-certified and fellowship-trained rheumatologist and ABIM General Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.

    His support for the disease state of osteoporosis runs deep, serving as the physician lead for the Geisinger HIROC Program. Holding memberships in ACR, ISCD, BHOF, and sits on the ASBMR Secondary Fracture Prevention Coalition. He has given multiple presentations at ACR, BHOF and ISO over the years. He is active in the UNM Bone Health TeleEcho, BHOF FLS Echo. He is a certified Clinical Bone Densitometrist (ISCD).

  • Dr. Parker is a fourth-generation physician. He graduated medical school from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He then completed his Endocrinology subspecialty training at Duke University. Dr Parker began clinical practice in 2003 as an endocrinologist in Wilmington, North Carolina and was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology in 2005.

    Dr Parker is certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Diabetes and Metabolism. In addition, he became a Certified Clinical Densitometrist in 2002 and received his Endocrine Certification in Neck Ultrasound (ENCU) from the American College of Endocrinology. Currently, Dr Parker practices at Wilmington Health, where he also served as Medical Director of an evidence-based obesity treatment program (Health Management Resources at Wilmington Health) for more than 8 years, and he also conducts clinical research in multiple areas of endocrine disorders, including adrenal disease, obesity, osteoporosis, and type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with PMG Research/ICON/Accellacare. He is Consulting Associate in Medicine at Duke University and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Coastal Carolina Chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) since 2014.

  • Mr. Torkelson is a Physician Assistant in the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine department within Mayo Clinic Health System. He specializes in adult lower extremity reconstruction, trauma, and treatment of osteoporosis in the setting of fragility fractures. He operates the only Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) within the Mayo Clinic Health System. He is an instructor of Orthopedics through the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and has given presentations on starting FLS programs both regionally and nationally.

  • Mr. Wing is a Nurse Practitioner practicing in Pensacola Florida with The Andrews Institiute Orthopaedic Trauma Department. Following his graduation from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he specialized in orthopaedics, both surgically and in bone health. He is a board member of the Bone Health Osteoporosis Foundation and has presented on bone health at both a regional and national level.
